admin: I don't believe, if you take an average, there are any significant outliers. For example, Shakespeare may have written prose but it is society that has made it popular.

You always treat society as one person, rather than a bunch of people. Every debate, I swear to god.

Back on earth, society is a bunch of people, and Shakesphere (who isn't an early English author) still did more for the English language than at least several million other people.

Contributions absolutely can be measured.

----------------------------------

That aside, why do you always selectively argue points? I try to address everything you say, even if it is brief.

Priest of Swag: I try to address the key points of clash. It's good debate practice to pre-empt what a judge would consider the most important points in a debate. If you respond to every point, you run out of time. For example, I could argue that Shakespeare was not meant to be an example of an early English author, but that is not material to this discussion. So therefore that, and about a dozen other things, won't factor into my considered response.

Shakespeare only did as much as society was influenced by him. As a member of that society, whatever influence the man had on me, and whatever part of that I share back to society, is a small example of how every action we take as social actors has an inherent feedback loop that develops society further. Language is ultimately the construction of the sum of society's impact, as is 99.99% of everything we see and do around us on a day-to-day basis.

Priest of Swag: Wouldn't you agree that the world has always been this way?
No one really fights for what they have anymore. People are empty inside, and as a result we live in an empty generation.
What do you mean by this?

Bi0Hazard: Wouldn't you agree that the world has always been this way?

No, people were always more self sufficient. The level of entitlement has not only risen from a political POV, but also from a cultural one.

What do you mean by this?
We are born with a lot already, and because of this no one is aware of our state of diminishing freedoms. Fancy materialistic possessions and shiny tech gadgets have blinded us too what is really important, Everybody needs a cause to fight for, but because of these things, there are very few actual good causes.

The system we have creates people more self centered than ever, but at the same time more dependent on each other than ever (Why our capitalistic system takes advantage of people more than ever, and our socialistic system promotes entitlement more than ever) . People are empty because their lives are mostly dominated by vein passions (making money to buy stuff and looking cool to get laid) , and more often than not people realize this too late.

They realize this when they are already graced with a spouse and kids, and not much to show for all the work they did in life before. It is easy to make money nowadays, and in the past establishing a foundation for a family would of been a more noble goal, but as money becomes more readily available, more should be expected in terms of the things people accomplish. Everyone lives like a king nowadays, even those in supposed "poverty." The concepts of both spirit and humility have fallen on this generation.

So, due to the progress we made and more fancy technology nowadays, we have a more pathetic generation?

People may have been more self sufficient but that was because society had less technology to make things easier. You had to work harder for what you wanted.
Soon, robots may replace us in labor, and we may get even less self sufficient.
However, this is largely viewed as more desirable.

Bi0Hazard: So, due to the progress we made and more fancy technology nowadays, we have a more pathetic generation?

I do not have a problem with industrial, military, and corporate technology. I do have a problem with how much technology has overwhelmed our daily lives. It has made us sycophants, and that is truly pathetic.

People may have been more self sufficient but that was because society had less technology to make things easier. You had to work harder for what you wanted.
And you think that was a bad thing?

People have the potential to work just as hard with technology nowadays, for even greater goals. The point I was making is that our generation is more adverse to hard work.

Self sufficiency is more than just about getting work done though. In general, it is about ----> being able

No I don't. I believe in the work ethic.

Yeah, but I guess that makes Bernie Sanders wrong since he believes Americans work too hard nowadays.

Bernie Sanders is incredibly misguided. It is one thing to encourage Americans to live more stress free, but another thing altogether to be in the European bandwagon of legally restricting how much people can put in work.

Crow: The most likely thing is that your connection was interrupted for some reason during the submission. I can't rule out a programming issue without the full post but I doubt it somewhat if it was just ordinary text.
