I joined debate clubs throughout middle school and high school. As you can imagine, the majority of the subjects we discussed were... uh, how should I say it... outside our area of expertise. Although similar subjects were discussed in classes like social studies(particularly the topics of gay marriage and abortion which, again, were not subjects most of us were too familiar with at the 7th/8th grade levels). 

Of course, I became much more familiarized with these topics around the time I started high school and therefore was able to articulate my arguments a lot better when it came down to debates.
