Why is modernism synonymous with Westernization?

With some exceptions, modernization has been followed by Westernization. But why is this? Why can't the native cultures simply "modernize" their traditional cultures and not become Westernized? I mean heck, if you go to Israel or Japan an ambulance car will have "ambulance" in English written on it. Also, they have all adopted western dress. But why is it any more "modern" than, say, whatever it is they wore in China, Japan, India, or Africa prior to colonization? I mean, couldn't Indian traditional clothing remain what people wear in India, except using modern construction methods and materials? And of course, this also goes for architecture, along with other things.

I'm one of those "God bless murica the greatest country on Earth" people as much as the next guy, but when the Westernization destroys the native cultures, we've got a problem.
Agree or disagree?

Dassault Papillon: Agreed. Good points.
Culture can advance just like technology. A lot of times modernization is imported from the West, along with Western culture, so there's that.
