Can somebody please make / find a small 16x16 icon we can use to indicate "thesaurus" in the debate editor?

Assuming thesaurus.com, just use their logo and resize it.

1) Don't have legal rights to use it
2) Not thesaurus.com (don't think they have an API anyway)

Theausrus.com is intentionally free open source. If you email them, you would more than likely get their approval.
They own that logo both with and without the T in the circle too. If you don't believe me, then go to thesaurus.com and the site icon will appear in the tab.

1) Quite the contrary. The site terms specifically state: "You will not modify, publish, transmit, participate in the transfer or sale, create derivative works, or in any way exploit, any of the content, in whole or in part, found on the Site."
2) You misunderstood my point 2. That doesn't matter. If they don't offer an API, I can't work with them.

Okay, then just use a bold letter "T" for thesaurus

My concern is a UX one - people might confuse that for "text formatting" like in GMail etc.

Use a book image with a T on the top. I think that would help.

Me sucking at graphic design certainly does not help here!

Lol. I will see if I can come up with something, even if it's very basic.
