At-tags are handy if you want to tag somebody with no space in their names, but what if somebody does have a space?

Yeah, I think it should now be possible to do this (sorry if there are bugs). I've rolled it out on the forums and will be doing so across the whole site. It's called "double at tagging". Basically you write "@@" and then the user's name, and then another @@ like so:
@@[insert username here]@@
Hope that's easy enough to use for everyone, and that this actually works.
Just as a test: @admin
