WODC Round 1 Rest Day - Posted by whiteflame 2015-06-20 21:28:06
It's amazing to me that you want me to both learn from and ignore your ratings. I don't care about my judge score, but I do care about improving. If you're not willing to provide any information on ho...
WODC Round 1 Rest Day - Posted by whiteflame 2015-06-20 14:55:56
In each case, you've made your views on my RFDs quite clear. You're continuing to make that clear in forum posts. Even if you didn't actually rate my RFDs, the fact that you always feel the need to di...
WODC Round 1 Rest Day - Posted by whiteflame 2015-06-19 23:19:37
Let's be clear on why I didn't vote on your debate. It was not because I knew you'd find fault with it. It's because this would be the third or fourth debate where I had taken the time to read through...
Quantity vs quality - Posted by whiteflame 2015-01-07 20:11:46
There's no easy answer. It depends partially on the type of debate, but mainly on the judge and what they allow. If drops are really important to a judge, that will mean they favor quantity over quali...
Advance Date for New Years Tournament - Posted by whiteflame 2015-01-06 03:52:48
We do actually have the first round topics set, so it will likely start within that time... so long as we get one more person.
2015 New Years Tournament - Posted by whiteflame 2015-01-05 18:44:22
I guess I'll take up a position on the board for this one.
Asking people on other sites to vote on debates - Posted by whiteflame 2015-01-02 07:32:55
I completely agree.
Edeb8 Member Awards 2014 - Posted by whiteflame 2015-01-02 05:56:14
I appreciate the award very much, Lars. Thanks!
What do you think of this strategy? - Posted by whiteflame 2014-11-28 17:03:22
Tough one. Generally, I feel people use a lot of arguments that try to throw their opponents off, and certain styles of debate do it in innovative, somewhat disturbing ways. You really can't just say ...
Your favorite kind of topic - Posted by whiteflame 2014-11-14 17:32:10
I get on board with social issues. Generally like discussing things that take the topic out of a solely moral debate, but I like analyzing why it is that we hold certain views from a more pragmatic pe...
Your favorite kind of topic - Posted by whiteflame 2014-11-14 17:22:42
Well, there are a lot of various categories of topics I enjoy. Generally a fan of policy topics, more specifically a fan of topics that involve some measure of science, health, and foreign policy.
Ignoring the Affirmative's Arguments - Posted by whiteflame 2014-11-02 20:58:13
I'm not attempting to bypass the ban, I'm very clearly asking you to lift it so that we can have a frank discussion. I removed the vote that so offended you as a show of good faith. You've made it qui...
Ignoring the Affirmative's Arguments - Posted by whiteflame 2014-11-02 19:24:46
I can read your points by not logging in, but if you want me to defend my view, I'd appreciate if you could finally remove the block you've placed on my account so that I can actually see what you're ...
"blocking" and voitng - Posted by whiteflame 2014-11-01 21:24:51
I'm not disagreeing with you, and I made it clear in my RFD that he had done exactly as you explain here. As I said, that could have been the sole basis for my vote, and it would have been a very shor...
"blocking" and voitng - Posted by whiteflame 2014-11-01 14:25:50
I'm a debater too, and I spent years going to regional competitions (and will probably be attending some this year). I have a decent idea of how resolutions work and how the BOP works. From what I saw...
"blocking" and voitng - Posted by whiteflame 2014-11-01 13:43:32
I appreciate the explanation, Lars. I took a great deal of time to write up this most recent RFD, and I appreciate that it won't be removed. As I said under the comment itself, however, if Csareo can ...
What's your guy's personality? - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-28 05:51:16
Just to further the point, I took the test from that link, and ended up an INTP. That's the 5th type I've gotten (ISTJ, ESTJ, INTJ, ISTP), and I've taken this 6 times, though as you can see, I've alwa...
What's your guy's personality? - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-28 05:14:31
I'm ISTJ... mainly. It's imperfect because I'm close to the line between introvert and extrovert, judging and perceptive. None of the type descriptions fit me particularly well, either, though ISTJ co...
Can you make new arguments in the final round - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-24 02:22:00
Sorry about that. I'd say it's unacceptable. You had the opportunity to make arguments in the first round, and while there are only two rounds, the basic rules still apply. It's not really a fair deba...

When to Source - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-11 02:02:10
I think you're misconstruing my argument. In a debate like that, logic is the main way you can use for explaining your argument, as any source you would use would just be an authority using logic in y...
When to Source - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-11 01:57:46
That doesn't appear to be his point, at least not so far as I can tell. I can better understand that opinion, but that's not what I'm getting out of this discussion. I also disagree with that to some ...
When to Source - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-11 01:55:27
Yeah... It's annoying. Anyway, it appears we have a difference of opinion on this subject. If you'd like, we can proceed with a debate on it, just formulate a topic and we can discuss it.
When to Source - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-11 01:52:06
BoP stands for burden of proof. Proof requires more than just assertion, and in the case of debate, it often requires actual proof, as in sources. You may be saying the same thing, but by adding a sou...

When to Source - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-10 23:44:18
Absolutely, 100% agreed. I think too many people utilize their sources to make their arguments for them, and as a judge, I don't abide that. If you don't provide the argument, the source is pointless.
When to Source - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-10 22:34:06
We'll need to come up with a solid topic, first, but sure.

In your judging system, you increase the impact of an argument by using evidence in sources.[/quote I didn't say that. In fact, I specifically separated impact from evidence. Evidence that shows h...
Csareo's "Initiative One" Submission: whiteflame - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-10 22:18:02
Well, I think it's pretty obvious I disagree. For one thing, that's tabula rasa, or blank slate type judging. Yes, certain professional judges do that (though from my experience, anyone who says they ...
Csareo's "Initiative One" Submission: whiteflame - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-10 22:16:13
I don't think it's reasonable to call every argument made in any given debate gospel until proven untrue. That sets the burden on the opponent every time an argument is made. By your view, a debater i...
When to Source - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-10 22:13:23
I'd say there's a difference between real life debating and online debating, but that the standard shouldn't be "source everything you post." It's not that difficult to determine whether an ...

Csareo's "Initiative One" Submission: whiteflame - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-10 21:55:16
I thought I made this clear, but I'll elaborate. This is really an evaluation of likelihood, so evaluating the links, warrants, evidence in the argument, as well as the rebuttals to those pieces, to d...
Csareo's "Initiative One" Submission: whiteflame - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-10 21:50:57
As I said, I'm amenable to changing the points scale here, as it's really something I came up with on short notice. I'm not sure that shrinking it so dramatically is the best way to go, though. Some a...
Csareo's "Initiative One" Submission: whiteflame - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-10 21:46:06
Yeah, I realize that that's not entirely clear. By "dominate," I mean people who make the conscious decision to produce several questions at a time in cross-examination rather than abiding b...
Csareo's "Initiative One" Submission: whiteflame - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-10 17:51:19
So, this still feels unfinished somehow. There's a lot of nuance that I left out, but I think it gets down to the key issues of how to judge a given debate, at least from my perception. Not sure I'm c...
Ban - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-09 05:11:27

Unanswered Questions about Debating - Posted by whiteflame 2014-10-09 02:08:37
- Who holds the burden of proof? There's a lot of disagreement on this. If you're making a positive claim, as RM says, that can often be a giveaway. If you're saying that policy should change, you ...
