Dassault Papillon: Almost all Maori now are mixed-heritage which complicates things. I think by now the average New Zealander has embraced elements of Maori culture. People feel connected to the tribe(s) they belong to. They retained identity, cultural norms like Marae protocol, and some ostensible governance via the Treaty of Waitangi.

Admittedly Maori have been little more smart about it and fortunate than most native populations. Certainly that racist governments felt the need to try to suppress Maori in times past proves that Maori did not take on western norms just because they took on western technology.
