So some people are upset that they feel the rate of forfeits is on the rise. What does the community at large feel about this? Is there anything we can do on a site community level to reduce the number of forfeits?

Is the rate on the rise? I hadn't noticed. Seemed to be about normal.
I definitely hate how many forfeits we do get, but it doesn't seem to be any more or less than there are on any other site.

admin: Depends on reason for forfeit. If people get busy and have to walk away for a bit? It may make sense to have a 'pause' function in the debate.

gree0232: Both debaters would need to agree to any potential "pause" I take it?

If this is the case, one viable community level alternative might be to just agree to restart the debate at a later time.
