Thanks to my opponent for agreeing to take up this challenge!

In the question of the best form of government (and the subject of this debate, arguing that democracy is the best), I put it forward that we are arguing for the most ideal version of any governmental system, i.e. one without the potential issues of corrupt politicians, etc.

Because of this, it becomes all to easy to prove democracy superior to alternatives. Democracy is the system of government in which citizens vote for legislation directly or for leaders who make legislative decisions on their behalf, or some mixture of the two. This system gives the people power, allowing for societal progression to dictate our laws and rights. In a properly defined system, all people have equal power, regardless of race, sex, religion, etc. etc.

Compare this to any other system of government and you will find it superior. Autocracies and monarchies are systems in which a single person or extremely small group of people have all of the political power, defining laws alone. Mussolini's Italy and Stalin's USSR were both forms of autocracy. These systems don't function well because giving a single person ultimate power takes away the ability of opposing viewpoints to adjust the system, and relies solely on the whims of a leader. Communism is a system of government in which the state takes over all means of production and requires people to have, at least in theory, identical resources and identical pay. The major problem in communism is the removal of property; nobody is allowed to own anything. This is diametrically opposed to the ideas of individualism inherent in democracy. Socialism is a sort of softer form of communism that actually does allow for property. While the term has grown fuzzier over the years, it generally involves heavy government oversight of industry, and may actually be compatible with democracy. Anarchists would argue for as little government as possible, making anarchy difficult to argue for since it is more accurately a form of non-government than anything else.

By default, we keep rolling back to democracy.
